Celtic v FCFC is always a highly anticipated game. This game was between the two teams who have occupied the top spot at most stages throughout the season. Two teams who are chasing the title.
As was to be expected from a team at the top of the table FCFC were competitive as soon as the whistle blew and had the best of the opening minute. Sadly from their point of view that was the only minute in which they were better than a ruthless Celtic side. In the second minute the commanding presence of Dusty shone through, he stepped forward to intercept, played a lovely pass up the middle to Simon (The Animal) Holland who in turn put Aaron in behind the FCFC defence and boom 1-0. Aaron doesn’t miss one on ones. A shell shocked FCFC never really recovered from here. They peppered the Celtic defence with long ball after long ball but the defenders were up to the task. Celtic always threatened on the break from here and so it was. Celtic swept up the pitch with alarming pace, Richie (Lightning) Linehan giving defenders nightmares again, Lightning played the ball across the box to an advancing midfielder, (Eric I think) shot was blocked but with a hand. Penalty. Dom. Goal. Enough said.
Celtic managed to neutralise the long ball threat with some smart pressing and the rest of the first half played out without much to report until 2 minutes before half time The Animal took off at lightning speed on the break. The covering FCFC defender had only one thing on his mind and unfortunately for him so did the referee after seeing the tackle. Red card.
FCFC had a mountain to climb in the second half now.
Celtic showed their strength in depth in the second half, making 2 changes at half time. Ste and Paul had played valiantly through injury and were given a well earned rest. In came Colm and Neil. The second half started with Celtic showing their class. FCFC were finding it difficult to get anywhere near the Celtic goal. In one of the moments they found themselves high up the pitch they gave the ball to Celtic and Celtic punished them. Lightning was away, he beat the defender with ease, glided into the box only for the keeper to make a good save, the ball fell back to Aaron who calmly took it down and teed it up for Eric who nonchalantly opened up his left boot, top corner. 3-0.
More changes followed in the second half. Colm (magic) Curtis came in for the outstanding Aaron Pu and it wasn’t long before he too was also on the score sheet. A great ball down the right to the marauding Dom (I don’t miss penos) Lytwyn found him in space and the cross found Colm at the near post. Colm controlled it with ease beat the defender twice and placed it in the far left corner (Magic also hit the post and the crossbar). 4-0.
It has to be said something unusual was happening here. It was 4-0 and neither Lightning nor The Animal had scored yet. Well don’t you worry because that is exactly what happened next. Colm Carson twice played the same ball in behind the FCFC left back. First, The Animal latched on to it, steamrolled into the box, outside of the right foot. 5-0. Lightning could be heard muttering under his breath “whatever you can do I can do better” and so on he went to the ball behind the left back, steamrolled into the box, inside of the right foot 6-0. And so the story is complete.
Celtic destroys their top of the table rivals and march on in first place. This game will live long in the memories of the Celtic faithful. BOOM
