Harrow was the venue for the exciting clash between Beijing Celtic and Sexy. Celtic were lucky to welcome back several first team players from their extended summer break, and with this strong squad Celtic was able to maintain high intensity throughout the 90 minutes. This high level of intensity resulted in Celtic creating numerous chances, and ended in a 5-3 victory.
The game started with a fierce pace and both teams creating good chances at either end. Richie Lenehan burst through the Sexy rear-guard and was brought down on the edge of the box. Nicodemus George, whose right foot was cultivated on the pitches of Wakanda, stepped up to bury the ball into the back of the net.
Sexy responded well to the goal and some smart teamwork resulted in a crisp pass from the left-hand side to be slotted in by one of their attackers. Soon after, Celtic pressed high as group on the Sexy defense and the ball dropped to new player manager Groot Lytwyn who slotted the ball into the bottom corner to the dis-belief of the Celtic faithful who had never seen the stalwart hit the target from outside the box.
As the game closed in on half time, up stepped Chris Makashima to produce a moment of magic from 35 yards out and steer the ball into the roof of the net with 5 minutes to go until half time. A great first half for Celtic given two poor results we had in previous weeks.
With Sexy forced to go for it in the second half the game opened considerably. After a rumbustious tackle in the Celtic box a penalty was awarded to Sexy. ‘He’s a diving twat” did nothing to sway the mind of the referee, although the thick scouse accent didn’t help with communication. 3-2. With the game finely balanced, David O’Conor pulled off a fine point blank save to deny Sexy from a corner.
Celtic weathered this storm well and suddenly Eric Farrell slid Alan Kelly one-on-one with the keeper, and despite Alan’s best efforts to pass the ball to the opposition keeper, the ball spilled out for him to smash home. This was a big goal as it gave Celtic breathing room as Sexy pressed further for an equalizer. 20 mins to go.
Soon after player/manager Dom looped the ball over the on-coming sexy keeper with a trademark header for his second of the game. Good night sexy. Sexy pushed further and managed another goal from the penalty spot. Although DOC made a great save, the rebound fell straight to the taker who dispatched from point blank range.
A strong performance from Celtic in which 16 players all contributed massively over the 90 minutes. A battling performance in which concentration was maintained throughout. This was specifically true early in the second half when questions of the Celtics cultural heritage were raised by a Sexy defender.
A statement after the game was released by Beijing Celtic which read “prior to common perception, Beijing Celtic have no members of the travelling community in their ranks. As a ‘family friendly football club’, any member of the travelling community that wishes to join Beijing Celtic can join by contacting our cultural heritage liaison officer David Mahon’.
Special mention also goes to Paul Fogarty who somehow survived a murderous challenge by the hefty sexy left back in the dying embers of the game. The young Dubliner flew 20 yards in the air and screamed like he’d just seen Kieron Nolan’s internet history, as the left back stood 10 yards away looking puzzled.
